SurfSet is a free utility that provides easy access to a number of hard-to-reach or hidden browser settings. If you use a Mozilla-based browser - Mozilla, Firefox, or Netscape 7, 8 - or if you use Internet Explorer, SurfSet can give you more control over how your browser works.

What does SurfSet do?

Extra customizing options for Firefox - Mozilla - Netscape:

 • Control the referrer header, UserAgent string, and other security-related settings.

 • Adjust various webpage rendering settings.

 •  Block 3rd-party images and IFRAMES to eliminate "web beacons" and tracking ads that allow you to be watched by advertising companies online.

 •  Install a custom background picture and font on all toolbars and menus.

Control hidden vulnerabilities and security problems in Internet Explorer:

 • Remove advertising.

 •  Remove restrictions that may block your access to IE settings.

 •  Fix Windows XP SP2 problems: Eliminate the Information Bar and stop the download nag that warns, "The publisher could not be verified...."

 •  Control hidden settings that could constitute a security risk: SafeSites, Exception Domains, Browser Helper Objects, and Browser Extensions.

 •  Change the window title and toolbar background.

   (Note: SurfSet cannot make Internet Explorer safe to use online. IE security settings are extremely complex, and as of this writing there is at least one critical IE security vulnerability that cannot be patched. But SurfSet can help in managing certain undocumented and inaccessible settings that affect Internet Explorer security.)

SurfSet 2 is currently BETA software. It has not been thoroughly tested under a variety of conditions.

SurfSet 2 beta may not be bug-free. If you use it please feel free to report any bugs or problems to JSWare.

Requirements: Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/2003. The Mozilla-based functions work in Mozilla, Firefox 1+, Netscape 7 or 8.

(Firefox is recommended over Netscape. Netscape is essentially Firefox with a Netscape "skin", but it is an AOL production and comes with the usual AOL commercial "foist-ware" that installs without asking.)

Required support files: If you use Win95, Win98 1st Edition, or NT4, you may need to install the VB6 Runtime file. See the Installation Tips page for information about that.
